Ebola Deaths in DRC Reach 192 as Confirmed Cases Rise to 808, WHO Declares Emergency

Currently, 363 patients are in isolation. The outbreak has spread across three provinces – Ituri (the epicenter), North Kivu, and South Kivu – affecting 31 out of 104 health zones in the country.

The virus, first detected in the DRC in 1976, is transmitted to humans by wild animals and spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids. Symptoms include fever, muscle cramps, headache, sore throat, followed by kidney and liver dysfunction and, in some cases, internal and external bleeding.

On June 5, the WHO and Africa CDC detailed a six‑month preparedness and response plan for the Bundibugyo strain, requiring $518 million in funding, health authorities said. The outbreak has also spread to neighboring Uganda.
