President Claudia Sheinbaum highlights long history of brotherhood between Mexico and Cuba

President Claudia Sheinbaum has affirmed that the people of Mexico and Cuba share a long history of brotherhood and solidarity, after receiving the credentials of Ambassador Eugenio Martínez.

“We also received the credentials of the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Eugenio Martínez Enriquez.  The people of Cuba and Mexico share a long history of brotherhood and solidarity,” the head of the Executive Branch stated in a message on her social media account.  The president has reaffirmed her support for Cuba on several occasions, which has materialized in various shipments of material aid to the Caribbean nation, and she continues to analyze ways to resume fuel supplies to Cuba.

For his part, Martínez expressed his gratitude to the dignitary, the Mexican government, and the Mexican people on several occasions.   He noted that for more than six decades, the United States has maintained an economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the island, which was tightened last January through an executive order signed by current President Donald Trump.

The lack of access to fuel resulting from this intensification affects critical areas such as electricity generation, the operation of hospitals, food production and distribution, and water pumping in the Caribbean nation.

In response to this situation, initiatives in support of Cuba have emerged in Mexico, from the government, the legislature, local administrations, social movements and organizations, unions, and political parties.

This Thursday, the president also received the credentials of the ambassadors of Egypt, Amr Abdelazim Elsayed Rifai; Indonesia, Franciscus De Salles Toferry Primanda Soetikno; The Netherlands, André Max Adriaan Driessen, and Portugal, Pedro Abecasis de Andrada da Costa Pereira.

“Mexico is united with the peoples of the world.   We welcome their representatives to our country,” the dignitary stated on social media.
