The Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust (ZAST) in Harare highlighted the inclusion of the statement against the United States blockade of Cuba in the Declaration of the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, India, on September 12.
ZAST indicated that it welcomes and firmly supports the position expressed by the BRICS leaders, expressing deep concern over the tightening of the blockade measures against the Caribbean island and the documented effects on its economy, energy supply, and humanitarian situation.
According to the Zimbabwe Anti-Sanctions Trust (ZAST), the decision to insist on the need to end economic, trade, and financial sanctions within the framework of the broader principles of sovereign equality, international law, multilateralism, and the right to development is significant.
The statement indicates that most countries oppose unilateral and secondary sanctions due to their potential consequences for human rights, health, and food security.
As an organization created to defend Zimbabwe against the adverse effects of sanctions and promote international solidarity against unilateral coercive measures, ZAST expressed its solidarity with the people and government of Cuba.
At the same time, it highlighted the position of BRICS (the economic and trade association of emerging economies (primarily Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa)) in support of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace based on mutual respect, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and non-interference.
The New Delhi Declaration represents an important reaffirmation of the principle that international economic relations should promote development and cooperation.
ZAST calls on governments, civil society organizations, academics, and grassroots organizations throughout Africa and the Global South to continue a constructive dialogue on the humanitarian and development consequences of unilateral coercive measures. Furthermore, we encourage greater South-South cooperation, solidarity, and collective advocacy for a just and representative international system, with the immediate end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington on Cuba more than six decades ago.
