Honduran Suspended Magistrate Morazán Denounces ‘Politicized Trial’ as Political Persecution

Mario Morazán, a magistrate of Honduras’s Electoral Justice Tribunal, testified before the National Congress on Monday that the impeachment proceedings against him constitute political persecution linked to the 2025 electoral period.

Morazán, who personally filed an amparo appeal at the Congress before his appearance, told lawmakers that the process seeks to “seize all institutional legitimacy without respect for the rule of law.” He insisted that “this is not an impeachment trial; it is a politicized trial” and asserted that he had always acted in accordance with the law.

The magistrate argued that the trial lacks impartiality because public statements about his conduct during the 2025 elections had already been made beforehand. In his view, right‑wing parties are using the process as a strategy to consolidate power at the expense of political plurality.

Morazán also challenged the application of the Political Trial Law, stating that it contradicts the fundamental human rights principles established in the American Convention.

This case adds to a series of prosecutions against prominent Honduran judicial and electoral figures, including former Attorney General Johel Zelaya, former Supreme Court President Rebeca Ráquel, and electoral councilor Marlon Ochoa.

Ochoa has declared that the trial against him “lacks all impartiality” and that the accusations aim to cover up bipartisan corruption practices related to the 2025 electoral fraud.
